About Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Debian based operating system that began in 2004. Based on Linux and developed by the community, it is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Ubuntu was founded by a British based company called Canonical, headed up by Mark Shuttleworth, a South Africa entrepreneur. Ubuntu, is by far today’s most popular Linux distribution, owing to the fact that it is an incredibly effecient, powerful, and easy to use operating system.

Ubuntu comes in many flavours to suite a wide variety of desktop tastes, from standard Ubuntu and Kubuntu to more specialized versions like Edubuntu which is geared towards educational purposes and Ubuntu Studio which is an optimized version of Ubuntu for audio and visual production and editing.

The name Ubuntu stems from an ethnic ideology of South Africa that focuses on alliances and relationship of people with each other. The word comes from Zulu and Xhosa speaking cultures and is seen as a traditional African concept of a belief in sharing that connects all humanity.
